How Do You Choose Organic Hair Care Treatment?
By Shane Rivers
A lot of our readers are looking to make a switch when it comes to their hair care products. Many have written in and asked, “How do you choose organic hair care treatment?”
Hair 101
Each shaft of hair is made up of three parts. They are:
- Cortex - The middle layer of the hair. It is comprised of hard proteins which can be broken by curling irons and brushing. The proteins in the cortex give hair its flexibility, and the pigment in the cortex also determines the natural color of your hair. This is the heaviest part of a person’s hair.
- Cuticle - The outer layer of your hair. The cuticle tends to have a shiny appearance when hair is healthy. When hair is damaged, the cuticle takes on a rougher appearance.
- Medulla - The inner layer of the hair. The medulla helps determine the body and bounce of your hair.
Hair extends out from the follicle openings in scalp and skin. Hair provides some protection against the elements, but it has no nerves (otherwise, it would be very painful to get a haircut).
Organic Hair Care
Before answering, “How do you choose organic hair care treatment,” it’s important to understand what defines an organic product. Basically, organic items are grown without growth hormones, chemical fertilizers and synthetic pesticides.
All farming was organic prior to the outbreak of World War II. Since that time, cancer rates have increased and been linked to chemicals found in many plants. Studies also indicate that the environment has been steadily damaged by pesticides and other poisonous chemicals.
Organic hair products only contain plants and herbs which were grown without harmful chemicals. These products do not irritate the hair or scalp, and they promote a healthier attitude towards out environment.
Advantages Of Organic Hair Care Treatments
The advantages of organic hair care treatment are many. These include:
- Organic hair care products produce no side effects in the user. Many chemicals in normal hair care products can cause allergic reactions.
- Keeping your hair free of chemicals will make it healthier, prevent hair loss and promote hair growth. The difference will be noticeable.
- Organic hair care products do not harm the environment.
- More and more organic hair care products are becoming available on the market.
- You’ll feel good about yourself knowing that you’re helping your body and the environment.
- When you make the switch to organic products, your hair may look worse for a short time. This is natural, as your hair is getting over the effects of all those unnatural chemicals.
NOTE: When choosing an organic hair care product, make sure it’s certified by the USDA. This is the only way to be certain that the product you’re buying is actually organic.
Choosing Organic Hair Care Treatments
So how do you go about choosing organic hair care treatments? Actually, there’s really nothing to it.
First, you’ll want to make sure that the label says it’s organic. Next, check for a USDA certification to make sure it’s really organic (labels can lie).
After that, it’s just a matter of choosing which fragrance is most appealing to you. Since the items are organic and free of chemicals, it takes a lot of the guesswork out of buying shampoo.
