Why Is Skin Care So Important?
By Doug Brinlee
Having healthy skin is just as important as any other healthy body part. Not everyone recognizes the benefits of taking care of their skin and thus it becomes damaged over time. The damage is not always readily visible to the naked eye. It can be hard to see it without the aid of medical equipment. So most people think that as long as they don’t see anything wrong with their skin that their skin is in good shape. Not so.
When we talk about healthy skin, we are not talking about freckles or any type of natural pigmentation. Unhealthy skin may have blemishes, wrinkles, rashes, acne, or be dry and cracked. You cannot neglect your skin, even if you think it is already healthy and doesn’t need any additional care. Everyone should be aware about their skin and the skin care routine that they use. There are many things that you can do to eliminate wrinkles and blemishes and improve the overall tone of your skin. But why is skin care so important?
Prevent Wrinkles And Other Signs Of Aging
Everyone gets older. Wrinkles are a fact of life and you can’t stop the sands of time. Sure, you can always go under the knife and pay big bucks to get rid of wrinkles. But have you ever seen those people the same age as yourself who naturally look at least ten years younger? Those are people who have taken care of their skin and may have even used anti-aging skin products.
Having healthy skin will slow the signs of aging such as wrinkles and other blemishes. By following a good routine and using skin care products like sunscreens when outdoors, you can keep those testaments to age at bay a little longer. You can stay younger looking and hold your head high when you go to your 20 year class reunion.
Fighting Disease And Infection
While staying younger and avoiding wrinkles is important, it is also materialistic. The main reason to have healthy skin is because it helps protect your body from diseases and infections. Think of it as a protective coating covering your entire body. It has several functions. The skin helps in regulating your body’s temperature. When your body starts to get hot, you sweat in order to cool your temperature. The skin protects us from harmful substances and toxins from entering our body. If your skin is weakened or has cracks in it, then all sorts of things can develop such as infections, blood poisoning, and diseases.
Skin Allergies
Another important reason to take care of your skin is if you have skin allergies. There are many things that can irritate your skin and some of them can actually be skin care products. If you have skin allergies, your skin can get red, itchy, swollen, or even break out in hives. If you don’t take care, these irritated areas can get infected. The best way to avoid this is to make sure that you stay away from skin irritants. If you are unsure about something that may affect your skin, tests a small spot on your skin. Watch the area closely and if it starts to get red and irritated, cleanse it immediately with water and soap and then apply a medicated ointment to it.
How To Take Care Of Your Skin
There are several ways to take care of your skin. Each one is just as important as the next and when used in a proper routine, you can get the best results. One important way to maintain a healthy skin is to properly cleanse it daily. Warm water and soap is important for removing dirt and excessive oil but you need to take care not to over do it. Some people are too harsh when they cleanse. They think that if their skin is breaking out, they have to remove as much oil as possible. You do not want to strip away all of the oils because they are important for moisturizing. Harsh over-cleansing can actually cause breakouts instead of preventing them. The proper way to clean your skin is to use a mild soap and then a cleansing product specifically for your type of skin (oily, dry, or normal). You have to be extra careful about cleansing your face because the skin there is thin and delicate. Using cleansers that are too harsh can easily cause damage.
Moisturizers are essential for healthy skin. You should use a moisturizer everyday because there are some areas, particularly on your face, that do not have oil glands for natural moisturization. Moisturizing is important for preventing wrinkles and dry, cracked skin. When your skin is dry, your pores produce more oil which after awhile can clog up your pores. The type of moisturizer you want to use will depend on your skin type. If you have dry skin you need a heavy moisturizer. If your skin is oily, try a lighter moisturizer.
Another way to take care of your skin is to drink plenty of water. Water helps keep your skin hydrated and toned and your body simply needs water to function. Water is necessary to keep cells from dehydrating and to aid in eliminating toxins from the body. There is some debate about the amount of water you should drink everyday. At the least, you should try to take in anywhere from 3 to 6 glasses of water a day. If not, your body may show mild signs of dehydration such as dark urine, dry lips, dry flaky skin, parched mouth, cracks on you tongue, and wrinkles.
And lastly, diet is an important method to keep your skin healthy. A nutritious diet with plenty of vegetables and fruits can help keep blemishes from your skin, help keep off the wrinkles, and keep the skin firm and toned. You need to keep the diet varied which makes sure you get all the essential vitamins and minerals. Not only is eating a proper diet good for your skin but it is good for your overall health and body.
