What Are the World’s Fastest Roller Coasters?
July 27th, 2010 |What Are the World’s Fastest Roller Coasters?
The world’s fastest roller coasters are steel roller coasters.

Wooden roller coasters have their own advantages — people say they “feel” like a real roller coaster as opposed to the smooth ride you feel on steel. Aesthetically, a wooden roller coaster is pleasing to the eye, and no matter how much flash steel roller coasters come with, they can’t match the look of real wood…

What Is Barnes & Noble’s Nook, and How Does It Work?
December 29th, 2009 |What is Barnes & Noble’s Nook, and how does it work?
The battle for eBook reader dominance is raging on. Though Amazon was the first company to put an eBook reader in wide release (the first Kindles came out in 2007 and completely sold out nationwide within fifteen minutes) there is one company whose reader is fighting for some of that company’s market share.
Barnes and Noble, whose bookstores pepper the American shopping mall landscape, put out an eBook reader this year called the Nook. Fortunately for Amazon (and unfortunately for the eggheads at B&N) the Nook is receiving the…

Though the Blu-Ray disc is exactly the same size as CD and DVD discs, Blue Ray stores more information and displays it better. Blue Ray technology is used with high-definition televisions and with the Playstation 3 game system.
Blu-Ray storage is an upgrade from the existing technology, because it allows the disc to store roughly six times the information a standard DVD could store. Data retrieval requires a shorter wavelength ray compared to…
Should CBS Fire Letterman?
October 5th, 2009 |Should CBS fire David Letterman?
My father-in-law stopped by for a visit last night, and the David Letterman blackmail news came up while we were sitting at the kitchen table. To my surprise, David Letterman’s love life has somehow become a Republican issue. At least according to my father-in-law it is.
Then this morning I woke up to the following headline on a news aggregator site: “CBS Has Got to Dump Letterman”. The article is from the New York Post, which is tabloid journalism. But does being part of the sensationalistic tabloid journalism industry explain the vehemence of Andrea Peyser’s…
Ten Must-Own Albums from the 2000s (#5 – #1)
September 15th, 2009 |Ten Must-Own Albums from the 2000s (#5 – #1)
5. Elliot Smith – From a Basement on the Hill (2004)
Elliot Smith is one of my favorite songwriters. His songs, from narratives about strung out ex girlfriends to poorly hidden political rhetoric, capture the tone of my adolescence and college years with perfect pitch. Often accompanying himself on acoustic guitar only (before later in life turning to larger studio productions) Smith rose above the crowd of acoustic noodlers to become a sort of big brother to an entire generation. When Elliot warned us about the dangers of cocaine and…

September 14th, 2009 |Ten Must-Own Albums from the 2000s (#10 – #6)
I know this list is gonna generate some controversy. Hell, I’m counting on that.
And considering the 2000s aren’t quite over yet (we have another 16 months or so to go) I do not consider this list complete. Having said that, I feel it would be difficult for an album released in the next year and a half or so to top any of the albums on this list.
Have a suggestion? Your favorite album get passed over? Just want to bend my ear for including both pop and indie…

With school in most parts of the country up and running, I figure its time to gather a list of my favorite movies for “back to school” time. August 27th, 2009 |Did the government go too far in pursuing steroid users in Major League Baseball?
Three of baseball’s biggest stars (Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez, and David Ortiz) have been outed in the past couple of seasons after investigators from the Federal government seized a list containing the names of players testing positive for steroids and other performance enhancers. These “leaks” have had something of a negative impact on the careers of these players, most notably Manny Ramirez who recently completely a 50 game suspension for his actions related to performance enhancing drugs. Those players who didn’t face these kinds…
Who Is Ray Kurzweil?
August 19th, 2009 |Who is Ray Kurzweil?
My first exposure to Raymond Kurzweil, better known as Ray, came while reading Rolling Stone magazine earlier this year. In the January 2009 issue, Kurzweil appeared in David Kushner’s article “When Man and Machine Merge”. Kurzweil’s words in that article stuck with me. Ray Kurzweil said in Rolling Stone that he wanted to clone his dead father via an exact genetic copy obtained from DNA in the father’s grave. That’s right — Kurzweil expressed an honest desire to build a copy of his dead dad by inventing special nanorobots that could enter his father’s grave…
When Will Digital Music Sales Overcome CDs?
August 19th, 2009 |When will digital music sales overcome CDs?
I’m guilty.
In this era, where digital seems to dominate every other format, I am still a sucker for purchasing a physical CD. Something about holding the album art in my hand, turning the shiny music disc over and over, sliding the device into the drive — I just don’t get the same satisfaction from a digital download. Call me a Luddite, call me what you will. I just can’t accept that I may never own a physical piece of music again. This is the same attitude that keeps me from joining…
What Sports Are Being Considered for Addition to the Olympics?
August 12th, 2009 |What sports are being considered for addition to the Olympics?
There are pretty strict rules about what sports get added to the Olympic program. Without going into too much detail about how new sports are added to the roster of games, the basic criteria are as follows: a new Olympic sport or discipline must be “widely practiced”. This means that a men’s sport must be played in at least 75 countries across at least four continents. For women’s sports, the number’s a bit lower — at least 40 countries participating on at least three continents.
For the 2016 Olympic…
