The short answer to this question is a resounding “No”. Shirley Jones never contacted Playboy magazine, and the magazine says they never contacted her about shooting a pictorial.
Rumors began to pop up all over the web last week — Shirley Jones, the 75 year old actress best known for her role as the matron of TV’s “The Partridge Family”, was planning on dropping the laundry for a Playboy photo shoot.
If Shirley Jones did appear in Playboy, she would be the oldest model in the magazine’s history by far. Runner up would be then 55 year old Terry Moore. And it isn’t as though Playboy hasn’t set a precedent for itself in terms of featuring older models. Joan Collins, Nancy Sinatra, Farrah Fawcett, and other celebs and models have posed well into their 40s and 50s.
Shirley Jones, whose character on “The Partridge Family” was the very definition of wholesome, was considering posing nude for Playboy at the age of 75. If her husband and manager Marty Ingels had his way, she would have done it. Ingels told Page Six magazine “She’s still drop-dead gorgeous, and at the age of 75, a natural beauty.”
Shirley Jones’ other famous characters were equally as wholesome as Shirley Partridge. Jones can be seen in the classic film versions of musicals like “Oklahoma!”, “Carousel”, and “The Music Man”. However, Jones took home an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as a prostitute in the film “Elmer Gantry”.
Shirley Jones’ “natural beauty” would be difficult to debate. She was named “Miss Pittsburgh 1952″ fresh out of high school. Part of her prize was a scholarship to an acting and singing workshop, known as the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Still unsure of her future, Jones planned on attending college to become a veterinarian. It was on a trip to New York City in 1953 that Shirley Jones found her future. Having auditioned on a whim for a Broadway agent, Jones found herself with her first professional role, as a chorus girl in a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. The two composers were so impressed with her, they placed her under personal contract — Shirley Jones was the first and only performer to be placed under contract to the famous Broadway duo.
The rest, as they say, is history. Jones went on to star in plenty of films, including the aforementioned “Elmer Gantry”, and starring with Ron Howard in “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father”. Her television credits include hits like “McMillan and Wife”, “The Love Boat”, “Hotel”, “Murder, She Wrote”, “Melrose Place”, and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” to name just a few.
Unfortunately for those of you eager to get a look at Shirley Jones in the buff, she will not be appearing in the famous men’s magazine Playboy. In fact, the magazine made statements to several news outlets stating that they “never offered Shirley Jones” a pictorial, and that the actress never contacted them about posing either. Was this a publicity stunt? It is unlikely that someone with the start power of Shirley Jones would need a minor splash like this one across the internet, but as Playboy has said they nor Shirley Jones ever considered shooting Jones in the nude, one has to wonder.
Shirley Jones is a vegetarian, no doubt influenced by her childhood love for animals. She is something of a conservative, having infamously stated that she didn’t understand why so many “Hollywood big-wigs” were trying to “undermine President Bush”. Jones is currently starring in the long running soap opera “Days of Our Lives” and has several film projects in the works.
