Aloha,

I rent an illegal shack in Hawaii. (common housing here) The owner of this property bought the property to let. He gave me permission to sublet as a vacation rental for the cost of a $100. increase in my rent to him. There is no lease printed lease agreement in effect.

Now, this landlord sent me an e-mail to buy liability insurance with him and his wife on the policy or give my notice by Dec 1. I do not want or need ins. ! What should I do? I cannot afford to pay this man's ins for him. I have been renting from him for 3+ yrs and in that time have paid about $40,000+ in rent to him. I do not sublet very often but I need the option, when I travel, to sublet, to cover the rent when I am away. I live month to month, on a subsistence income, growing my own food. There is no reason anyone would ever want to sue me.

What should I do?

Aloha for you manao and helpful words of advice,
