What new horror movies are coming out in 2010?

Update–September 27, 2010 – My friend Shane Rivers has just published a post about Upcoming Horror Films at Only Good Movies. Check it out for the latest info about this October’s slate of new horror movies..

A LOT of new horror movies are coming out in 2010.

If you’re like me you’re weary of the same old shlock that Hollywood’s been putting out for the last couple of decades. We’ve had so many “romantic comedies” mixed in with countless reboots and rehashed plots you’d think there was a writer’s strike going on.

Luckily for fans of horror films, 2010 looks like a more than decent year. Each month has an exciting movie and while some are sequels or reboots there is plenty of original material coming out in the next year.

January 2010

Daybreakers, starring Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe

Early reviews of this film are good.

Legion is a horror movie about angels. I like the sound of that.

February 2010

The Wolfman, starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins

If this film hadn’t swapped directors (Mark Romanek to Joe Johnston) maybe early murmurings would be more positive. Still, a great cast and a cool setting usually means a great horror flick.

March 2010

Season of the Witch, starring Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman

If you’re ready for another Nic Cage-led instant B-movie classic, this film’s for you. According to reviews, Cage is playing a Crusader without an accent. That’s right, we get to hear the real and completely anachronistic American accent of Cage throughout the film. Go see this horror film because it may be one of the worst movies released since Cage’s last travesty.

April 2010

A Nightmare on Elm Street

A Nightmare on Elm Street

A Nightmare on Elm Street

The most anticipated horror film of the year.  We’re hearing all kinds of crazy rumors about A Nightmare on Elm Street. Some people say that the new Freddy (played by the quite talented Jackie Earle Haley of Watchmen fame) is an improvement, others say it is a detraction. Some say the new makeup effects make Freddy’s burns look “too realistic”, although I can’t see that being a bad thing. One thing is for sure–this is one reboot worth buying early tickets for. (Get ready for the remake by watching all of the original movies, which are available at Amazon cheap. And if you buy something from Amazon using our link, we’ll make a small commission, which helps pay for the hosting on the site.)

May-June 2010

Honestly there’s no horror movies coming out during early summer that are worth seeing. Go check out Prince of Persia in May and The A-Team in June. Seriously.

July 2010

Predators, starring Adrien Brody and Topher Grace

The long-awaited direct sequel to Predator, this film is Robert Rodriguez’ old spec script he shopped around for years but never got made. Yeah, I know, another reboot. But this one’s got Predator dogs! Predator freakin’ dogs, man! Get over it.

August 2010

Friday the 13th, Part Two

Though we’re unsure if this film’s gonna make it out on schedule, we think it may be worth a spot on your calendar. Rumor has it, the film’s gonna be in 3-d, though the fact that none of the original cast want anything to do with it isn’t a good sign.

September 2010

Priest, starring Paul Bettany and Christopher Plummer

Yes, another movie in 2010 in which Paul Bettany plays a holy figure in a horror setting. Hopefully this film will be better than January’s Legion.  Unlikely, as they were both directed by the same person. Expect your standard “vampire western” here, lots of big guns and nasty vampires.

October – December 2010

Look out for any of these titles which are as yet unscheduled but are worth watching:

After.Life – Liam Neeson and Christina Ricci star in this weird movie about a woman being buried alive. I want to see this right now.

Splice — Guillermo del Toro produced film about the horrors of genetics. Looks really brainy and beautiful.

Ravenous — A woman and her brother are trapped in a house with a man-eating tiger while a hurricane rages outside. Seriously. If I could make this kind of thing up, you think I’d be blogging right now?
