The PSAT is the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, or the Pre-SAT. It is also known as the NMSQT or National Merit Scholar Qualifying Test — scores on the PSAT can earn high school students accolades and scholarships as part of the National Merit Scholars program. The PSAT is a good barometer for a student’s performance on the SAT and their ability to earn admission at colleges around the country.

What is an average GRE score?

The GRE, or Graduate Record Exam, is a required test for people wishing to enter Graduate School. The GRE is made up of two distinct tests — the General Test and any Subject Tests you wish to take. Many people won’t need to take any Subject Tests, but some areas of study will require it.

The General Test is made up of three parts — verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing. The verbal and the quantitative tests will produce a separate score between 200 – 800. Scores on the analytical writing test are reported in…

How Old Do You Have to Be to Babysit?

January 4th, 2010 |

How old do you have to be to babysit?

Babysitting is a great part-time work choice for young teenagers — most states won’t allow kids to work until they are a certain age, usually between 14 and 16 depending on the state. However, if you want your child to make a little extra money while learning work ethic and probably having a good time to boot, babysitting is a viable and legal career option.

There is a consensus among people hiring babysitters that the minimum age is about 12. That’s the age at which a child seems able to handle…

How Old Do You Have to Be to Buy Condoms?

It is hard enough getting up the nerve to buy your first pack of condoms without having to worry about breaking the law. Many young people write in to the site asking if there is a legal age limit on the sale of condoms and other prophylactics.

I want to make this perfectly clear — there is no age restriction on condom sales. You can buy them no matter your age. In fact if a salesperson were to deny you the purchase of condoms he or she could get in…

What Is an Aztak EZ Reader, and How Does It Work?

January 1st, 2010 |

What is an Aztak EZ Reader, and how does it work?

The Aztak EZ Reader is an eBook reader device that is relatively low-cost and very user friendly. These devices stand in contrast to Amazon’s Kindle (the EZ Reader is over $100 cheaper) which throws in a lot of features that many people don’t mind sacrificing for a lower price.

The EZ Reader is known for being the energy efficient and affordable version of popular eBook readers.

Aztak EZ Reader Pluses

There’s a lot to love about the Aztak, especially considering it is a piece of “budget technology”.

What is an iRex Digital Reader, and how does it work?

The iRex Digital Reader, aimed at the businessman or business professional, is a feature-packed alternative to the Amazon Kindle. As a matter of fact, the iRex Digital Reader is the only other eBook reader I’d want after the latest version of the Kindle.

The iRex Digital Reader is as small as the newer versions of the Kindle without losing many of the features.

The Good Points

The iRex’ newest version has an 8.1 inch touch screen (that’s right — touchscreen functionality) that uses the same E Ink tech

What Is a Sony Portable Reader, and How Does It Work?

December 30th, 2009 |

What is a Sony Portable Reader, and how does it work?

Portable Reader is the result of Sony tossing their hat into the eBook reader ring. The full name is the Sony PRS-500 Portable Reader, but most people drop the nerdy “PRS-500″ label when discussing the device.

The price of Sony’s reader is equivalent to similar devices from Amazon and Barnes and Noble–around $300, though it must be said that Amazon’s Kindle averages about $40 cheaper. The big knock on Sony’s eBook reader is the slightly higher cost compared to the features offered by the device. You’d think if you’re…

What Is Barnes & Noble’s Nook, and How Does It Work?

December 29th, 2009 |

What is Barnes & Noble’s Nook, and how does it work?

The battle for eBook reader dominance is raging on. Though Amazon was the first company to put an eBook reader in wide release (the first Kindles came out in 2007 and completely sold out nationwide within fifteen minutes) there is one company whose reader is fighting for some of that company’s market share.

Barnes and Noble, whose bookstores pepper the American shopping mall landscape, put out an eBook reader this year called the Nook. Fortunately for Amazon (and unfortunately for the eggheads at B&N) the Nook is receiving the…

December 18th, 2009 |

What is a Safe Fast Diet?

A safe fast diet is just what it sounds like–a quick but careful way to drop pounds in weeks or even days as opposed to longer term diet plans.

The safe fast diet that everyone  is talking about is called the calorie shifting diet.

The best part about the calorie shifting diet and other diets like it is that you aren’t being restricted to some extremely low amount of calories — in fact, you can eat just about the same number of calories as you do normally.  Like the name implies, you’re “shifting” your…

What is an Average LSAT Score?

If you’re looking to get into a top notch law school, scoring a solid points total on the LSAT is crucial.

High profile professions all have their scary entrance exam — for medical school, it is the MCAT that keeps students up at night. For word crunchers, it is the uniform CPA exam. For those of us applying to law school, nothing gives us the cold sweats like the LSAT.

LSAT scores range from 120 to 180 — 120 is the lowest, 180 the highest. According to the FNBC blog, a good LSAT score is…

What are Some Questions to Ask a Lawyer?

When you first sit down to consult with a lawyer, it may be difficult for you to think of questions you need answered. Many people are intimidated by lawyers the same way they are intimidated by doctors, dentists, or their mother-in-law. Here are a few key questions to ask at your first consultation.

According to this post at the website for The American Bar Association, the most important generic questions to ask a lawyer are –

  • What is your experience in this area of legal practice?
  • How long have you been

How Can I Change Her Mind?

December 3rd, 2009 |

Dear Deb,

Ok. I am a 43 year old woman with a 17 year old autistic daughter. I have been married for over 20 years now but I am in love with my best friend. Tasha has also been married about the same amount of time I have and has kids of her own. We have been friends for almost 15 years.

My husband doesn’t have any idea that I like women and I have never cheated on him even though he has cheated on me at least once that I know of. But I am really in love

Song Question about 2007 Canadian Band

December 3rd, 2009 |

Ask Deb -

Here’s a tough one, as my memory has died in the past couple of years. I don’t know the name of the band, the song, or the girl that sang it. It came out in 2006 or 2007. (about the same time as the song “Pain“).

The girl was new to the band. I believe I heard either the girl or the band were from Canada. The girl did an interview (i believe for Mtv)- she talked about her first time on stage while they set up for a concert. She said something about she was in

Asking out a Shy Guy

December 3rd, 2009 |

Ask Deb -

My name is Maali. I’m 22 and a few months ago I met this guy who happens to be my little nephew’s swimming coach. Well, I have to admit that I liked him since the first moment I saw him, but I really didn’t think that anything could happen between us, since he’s sooooo shy and serious. With time, he started paying more attention to me and giving me flirtatious looks, but when our eyes meet or when we come, close he blushes and says “hey” nervously.

So I took the initiative and asked him a random

How Many Christmas Carol Movies Have There Been?

November 25th, 2009 |

There have been 20 different films based on Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, if you consider the recent 3-D version, Disney’s A Christmas Carol, starring Jim Carrey. When I say there have been 20 Scrooge Stories on film, though, I’m talking about animated films for Children, silent movie shorts, modern adaptations and films loosely based on A Christmas Carol. If you want faithful, feature length live-action films that played on the big screen, there have been 7 such movies based on A Christmas Carol.

The original 1843 novella by Charles Dickens was titled A Christmas…

Why Is Everybody Talking About Glenn Beck?

Glenn Beck is a conservative talk radio show host, author and tv commentator on FoxNews.

While Glenn Beck had been for years a solid second-tier radio personality in the tradition of Rush Limbaugh, with a show on CNN and Headline News and his nationally syndicated Glenn Beck Program on the radio waves, it was the move to Fox News and the airing of the Glenn Beck Show that made Beck a household name.

On a cable channel known for outrageous characters and wild-eyed opinions, Glenn Beck soon stood out from the crowd with…

What Is BMI?

November 10th, 2009 |

What Is a “Body Mass Index”?

“BMI” stands for “body mass index” and is a measure of how overweight a person is. A person’s B.M.I. tells if that person is overweight and, if so, whether that person is obese. There are two ways to determine your BMI using height and weight in pounds.

One method of calculating BMI is to take your lbs and multiply them by 703. Then take your height in inches and square that number. Then divide the first number by the second number.

If you have a BMI of 25 to 30, you are considered overweight.…

What Is Blue Ray?

November 9th, 2009 |

What Is Bluray Disc Storage?

“Blue Ray” is what people often called Blue-Ray disc storage, which is simply an optical disc storage technology meant to supercede DVD.

Though the Blu-Ray disc is exactly the same size as CD and DVD discs, Blue Ray stores more information and displays it better. Blue Ray technology is used with high-definition televisions and with the Playstation 3 game system.

Blu-Ray storage is an upgrade from the existing technology, because it allows the disc to store roughly six times the information a standard DVD could store. Data retrieval requires a shorter wavelength ray compared to…

What Is Acid Rain?

November 6th, 2009 |

Acid Rain Basics

Acid rain is a rainfall that is unnaturally acidic in nature, usually caused by the inclusion of nitric and sulfuric acids from the emissions of chemicals from industrial plants in the region.

When nitrous oxides and sulfur oxide are pumped into the atmosphere, those chemical compounds react with oxygen and water in the air, creating clouds that contain nitric acid and sulfuric acid. The next time it rains, the rain water will come down as “acid rain”.

Most acid rain is produced from gases released by the burning of fossil fuels. Roughly 2/3rds of the acid rain…

What Is Minimum Wage?

November 5th, 2009 |

Minimum Wage Laws

“Minimum wage” is the lowest minimum wage that an employer may pay to a worker in montly, daily and especially hourly wages. Theoretically, workers are not allowed to legally sell their services for less than the minimum wage, either.

The idea behind a legal minimum wage is to establish a standard of living so that less skilled workers do not live in poverty in the United States.

Opponents of minimum wage dispute whether this is what happens with the minimum wage, claiming a legal minimum wage leads to unemployment of younger, inexperienced, handicapped or less…

Which Jobs Pay Best with No College Degree?

There are well-paying careers that people do not need college degrees to enter. Most of these careers are found in fields that are either highly competitive or that include responsibility with many lives on the line or a lot of money on the line.

You’ll also notice that these positions tend to require someone to receive a hefty amount of on-the-job training and possibly a license of some sort. But you won’t have to sit in a classroom for four years to hold these jobs.

Fun Questions to Ask Strangers

Fun Questions To Ask a Stranger

Talking to strangers can be one of the hardest things to do, if you’re introverted or unsure of yourself. Thinking of a decent ice-breaker that might interest a stranger, but not appear to be a come-on, is hard to do when you’re sitting on a bus or in the waiting room at some office. Even when you’re at a party where everyone presumably arrived to have a good time and get to know other people better, asking fun questions to a stranger can seem, well, strange.

Sometimes, though, off-the-wall questions break the ice and…

What Do Buddhists Believe?

October 21st, 2009 |

Common Beliefs of Most Buddhists

Buddhism was created in the sub-continent of India somewhere around the year 563 BCE by Siddharta Gautama, more famously known as the Buddha. Buddhism has in common several beliefs with another major world religion which originated in India, Hinduism. These beliefs include cause-and-effects ethics in the form of Karma, the illusionary nature of the world (known as Maya) and the cycle of reincarnation, known as Samsara.

To break the cycle of reincarnation, Buddhists seek enlightenment, which will lead nirvana (an end to hatred, greed and delusion) and involves paying off a karmic debt, which is…

Will The Days of Ours Lives By Canceled Soon?

After an 18-month renewal in November 2008, Days of Our Lives is signed to continue on NBC until September 2010 , but there have been constant rumors of a cancellation since Guiding Light was canceled in September 2007. In fact, there were rumors at the time that The Days Of Our Lives would not survive 2009, at least before the renewal.

Declining ratings in the summer of 2007 made this seem a certainty, but changes in writers and an 11th-hour new contract seemed to save the show at the time. Rumors…

How Old Do You Have To Be To Rent a Hotel Room in the United States?

18 is a good rule of thumb, if you have a picture I.D. and a credit card or debit card. In most hotel chains in the United States, customers need to be 18 years of age to rent a hotel room. The age is often 17 in Canada. With locally-owned hotels, the age of motel rental is often left to the discretion of the hotel owners or the staff on hand when you ask to rent a room.

How Old Do You Have to Be to Get a Job?

October 16th, 2009 |

What Is the Minimum Age Limit For Employment?

Specific laws bar or allow people of certain ages to work specific jobs. 16 years old is the minimum age to get most jobs. Employers can hire people under 16 years old in certain circumstances, but in other circumstances, employers cannot hire people under 18 years old.

The list of exceptions is long. This page lists all of the exceptions to the rule that a 16-year old can work most jobs. 13-year old, 14-year old, 15-year old, 16-year old, and 18-year old workers should study this to avoid applying for jobs they…

Should CBS Fire Letterman?

Should CBS fire David Letterman?

My father-in-law stopped by for a visit last night, and the David Letterman blackmail news came up while we were sitting at the kitchen table. To my surprise, David Letterman’s love life has somehow become a Republican issue. At least according to my father-in-law it is.

Then this morning I woke up to the following headline on a news aggregator site: “CBS Has Got to Dump Letterman”. The article is from the New York Post, which is tabloid journalism. But does being part of the sensationalistic tabloid journalism industry explain the vehemence of Andrea Peyser’s…

Ten Must-Own Albums from the 2000s (#5 – #1)

5. Elliot Smith – From a Basement on the Hill (2004)

Elliot Smith is one of my favorite songwriters. His songs, from narratives about strung out ex girlfriends to poorly hidden political rhetoric, capture the tone of my adolescence and college years with perfect pitch. Often accompanying himself on acoustic guitar only (before later in life turning to larger studio productions) Smith rose above the crowd of acoustic noodlers to become a sort of big brother to an entire generation. When Elliot warned us about the dangers of cocaine and…

Ten Must-Own Albums from the 2000s (#10 – #6)

And considering the 2000s aren’t quite over yet (we have another 16 months or so to go) I do not consider this list complete. Having said that, I feel it would be difficult for an album released in the next year and a half or so to top any of the albums on this list.

The world recently lost the “oldest person” known to still be alive.

Baines was quoted when she turned 115 last year that she “enjoyed life so much she wouldn’t mind living another 100 years”. Emma Camanag, head administrator at Western Convalescent…

How to Fend Off a Shark Attack

So you’re in Australia on your dream vacation. One minute you’re snorkeling with the family, wondering what you’ll eat for dinner, not thinking about work, maybe you’re even a little bit happy. Barney Frank Wants You to Smoke Marijuana

There are currently two pretty major pieces of legislation before the Federal government related to marijuana. From the political right comes a motion by an Illinois congressman named Mark Kirk. Kirk wants to make the sale of a particularly potent new strain of marijuana (known as “kush”) punishable by fines up to $1 million and a prison term up to 25 years long. I went to college, and I’ve been to my share of parties after those heady years at University, and I’m a bit familiar with this “kush” strain — yes,…
