Six Sigma Green Belt
Six Sigma is one of the more popular methods used by companies for improving overall performance while at the same time reducing defects and waste in different areas. The system has several underlying aspects to it but one of the things that make it work is that the system is broken up into several levels. Each of these levels has their own function but are set up to support one another. One of the main characteristics of Six Sigma is the division of personnel into Executives, Champions, and various Belts. At the project level, there are Black Belts, Master Black Belts, Green Belts, Yellow Belts and White Belts. The lowest level for workers just starting out with Six Sigma is the Green Belt.
What Is A Six Sigma Green Belt?
They have learned the basic principles of implementing Six Sigma methods into the workplace. Green Belts are employees of an organization who have received training on Six Sigma and use what they have learned on a full-time basis along with their regular job duties.
Green Belts work directly underneath Black Belts who sometimes supervise teams of Green Belts. The skills and knowledge base of Green Belts is not as extensive as Black Belts. However, the certification gives an employee a working knowledge of Six Sigma principles and teaches a Green Belt how to lead company projects with non-certified members.
What Are Some Green Belt Responsibilities?
Six Sigma is an important skill for any company employee to have. It allows an employee to understand the goals and mindset of the company so that they can manage their job duties better to meet quality control. Every Six Sigma Belt has separate functions and responsibilities.
Six Sigma Green Belts are in charge of basic specific tools that allow them to effectively improve company processes. The main duty of Green Belts is to analyze and solve quality problems. They mostly collect data, analyze it, and prepare it for supervising Black Belts. At the most basic level, they are involved in quality improvement projects for the company. While they do not lead projects, Green Belts are sometimes responsible for leading teams of other Green Belts or non-Six Sigma certified members.
How To Become A Six Sigma Green Belt
Becoming a Green Belt requires Six Sigma training and certification. Green Belt training courses are a beginner’s introduction to six sigma quality control methods. The training courses are based on learning to better understand variations in company production and learning to control them.
In order to qualify for training, employees must have three years of job experience. Before they can enroll in a course, they should check with their company to make sure that they use Six Sigma methods. Part of completing one’s Six Sigma Green Belt certification is to complete a company project using Six Sigma methods. If your company already uses Six Sigma or a similar quality control system, they might provide the training for you.
If your company does not use Six Sigma or provide any such training, then you will need to look outside the company for proper support and training courses.
Six Sigma training and certification can be completed through a number of organizations. There are companies that teach Six Sigma principles as well as universities and trade schools. The best thing to do is find one closest to you and make sure they are properly certified to teach.
Training courses can run anywhere from one week, two weeks, or even an entire college course. If an institute can not be found nearby, there are online courses you can take. These require that you complete so many hours.
Six Sigma training courses require that applicants for a Green Belt receive an overview of the methods and principles of Six Sigma. Some of the things covered in training involve the methodology used to solve problems that commonly plague business projects. Applicants are also taught how to work to improve the level of quality control. These principles are key to maintaining financial improvements for the company.
At the end of the Six Sigma Green Belt training course, all applicants will be required to take an exam to gauge what you have learned and how well you learned it. The test is four hours long and consists of 100 questions. Most Six Sigma courses in the U.S. only offer the test in English.
Once you have completed the course and taken the test, you do not receive your certification until you complete an improvement project using the Six Sigma principles that you learned. This is why it is important that your place of work cooperates with the training. If other members of your company have gone through the training, too, then it may be easier to work as a team on the project. If they are already certified, then they too can help give advice and provide resources for project completion. If there are no other applicants in your department of the company, don’t despair. Some programs even offer instructor assistance to help applicants complete their projects.
