The Medifast Diet Plan is getting a ton of attention because of its use by some medical doctors to control type 2 diabetes. Medifast is an old school diet plan — you’ll eat mostly meals that are prepared by Medifast, supplementing with one or two meals of your own. Many diet plans are moving away from the “prepared meals” setup and moving toward teaching their customers how to prepare their own healthy food. The people at Medifast believe firmly that people trying to escape the perils of type 2 diabetes (or people just trying to shed excess body fat) respond fastest to meals that are prepared ahead of time. If you like the convenience of having your meals prepared for you, Medifast may be your ideal diet plan.
How does Medifast work?
If you need to lose a lot of weight, or if you have diet complications from diabetes, the road to weight loss seems impossible to navigate. There’s healthy weight loss, and there’s starvation — somewhere between indulgent snacking and starving yourself is the healthy eating plan that will trim inches from your waist and keep you healthy at the same time. Doctors tell us that the Medifast diet plan can control and even completely eliminate type 2 diabetes in many patients — a remarkable breakthrough for people suffering from the side effects of this nasty disease.

Results from the Medifast Diet Plan are clinically proven — medical studies prove that the results of the Medifast Diet Plan are both healthy and more extreme than results of other diet plans. The Medifast plan is based on the idea that eating a structured meal plan (featuring Medifast Meals that are designed with nutrition in mind) will allow a person to successfully lose weight without losing muscle. How do they do it?
Using a combination of protein and carbohydrate foods, Medifast creates what is called a “calorie deficit”. This deficit instructs your body to burn fat for energy while still building muscle. The Medifast 5 & 1 Plan, the gold standard of Medifast weight loss plans, was put together with the help of medical doctors and nutritionists. But don’t think of the Medifast Diet Plan as just another diet — the inventors want you to think of Medifast as an entire lifestyle makeover.
No more short-term diets or rapid weight-loss diets that lead immediately to weight gain as soon as you give it up. Using the Medifast Diet Plan, you will learn portion control, how to eat low calorie foods, and a weight-loss lifestyle program that will lead to rapid weight loss faster than a traditional diet plan. Medifast is proven to help you lose an average amount of weight in the neighborhood of between 2 to 5 lbs per week depending on your metabolism. Even better, the Medifast Diet Plan comes in many different customized programs for their customers, helping them match their needs with the food available on their diet plan. Everyone from diabetics to people suffering from gout — from nursing moms to seniors — from teens to menopausal women — people from all walks of life have a Medifast Diet Plan built to their needs.
Far from a fad diet, Medifast has been on the market for years and the company is even listed on the current Forbes “200 Best Small Companies to work for” list. With happy employees and satisfied customers alike, Medifast has decided to move their diet plans out of the doctor’s office and into the online world. You still need to communicate with a doctor or dietitian to use the Medifast diet plan properly, but online support means an easier ordering process and easier access to the Medifast plan for people around the country. Check it all out at Medifast1.com.
Weight Loss & Diabetes Control
If you’re looking for hardcore weight loss or diabetes control, consider the Medifast diet plan. The main feature of the Medifast meal plan is the fact that these meals are certified “Low Glycemic”. Low glycemic foods control the release of glucose in your body, which is why it causes weight loss and can reverse the effects of diabetes.
A sample menu for a day on Medifast looks something like this — start with a small serving of Medifast prepared scrambled eggs, enjoy a Medifast chocolate shake for a snack, eat a bowl of Medifast chicken soup for lunch, enjoy a brownie snack in the afternoon, supplemented by your own “Lean and Green meal” that you prepare at home, made up of lean meats and veggies.
Medifast diet plan is backed up by scientific studies conducted by big name hospitals — Johns Hopkins University is the most famous hospital that has certified the Medifast diet plan as effective for weight loss and as type 2 diabetes control. One Johns Hopkins study found that Medifast is more effective at controlling type 2 diabetes than the current American Diabetic Association recommended diet. According to the JHU study, approximately 40 percent of the Medifast participants lost 5 percent or more of their initial weight, compared with just 12 percent of people studied who were following the standard ADA diet. Additionally, 24 percent of Medifast users switched to a lower level of diabetes medication, compared to literally no patients whose medication requirements were lowered from the standard ADA diet. How does it work? People who eat the Medifast diet plan have “significantly lower levels of glucose, insulin, A1c, lipids, and blood pressure” as well as up to a hundred pounds of weight lost.
Weight Loss Basics
We all know the formula for losing weight — eating less and exercising more. The Medifast plan is not particularly new — it follows this basic pattern by restricting your caloric intake to anywhere from 800 to 1,000 calories a day which, combined with mild exercise, is sure to slim you down. Depending on how many calories you normally eat, that could be a reduction of as much as 75% which is extreme. This is the main reason why the Medifast diet plan must be accompanied by supervision and advice from a medical doctor or dietitian. In general, doctors won’t suggest that you eat less than 1,200 calories a day, but while you’re on the Medifast plan you will get advice and tests from a medical professional who will make sure your body is getting the nutrition it needs without all the extra calories. Not everyone will fall into the 800 – 1,000 calorie range. Your doctor will help you decide what rate of caloric intake is best for you. Some people will start out eating a higher calorie diet and slim down as their body adjusts.
Many people who attempt the Medifast diet plan complain that they’d rather learn to cook healthy food rather than be provided with specific meals — if you’re a DIY type or a kitchen hound, Medifast is probably not the diet you’re looking for. On the Medifast plan, you’ll be eating five Medifast prepared meals each day along with a homemade meal the plan refers to as a “Lean and Green” meal. For some people, taking away the burden of thinking about what to eat means easing stress and making a diet plan easier. The good news for people who are afraid of the expense and routine of prepackaged meals — there will come a point during the Medifast plan when your Medifast supervisor will teach you how to adopt your own healthy eating plans.
Built into the Medifast plan is a four month period (after some weight loss is achieved) during which dieters enter a “transition phase”. This transition phase includes preparing more home cooked meals and learning from a Medifast diet coach. If you’re participating in Medifast online programs, your online health coach will really get to work during this transition period, tracking your progress and communicating with you to make sure you make it through the lengthy transition process.
Medifast for Men
We’ve all heard it before — men have an easier time losing weight than women. The male body is built to put on and shed pounds faster than women’s. Men are also more likely to be active than women, though this may not be the case in every instance — “male” jobs tend to be more active. Medifast will work faster on men than on women, as with any other diet. The faster male metabolism will respond to the extreme calorie reduction plan that Medifast uses within a matter of a week or two, and because men will notice the weight loss faster than women, Medifast for men is an ideal way to jump start a healthy change.
Since men are generally more active than women, the reduction in calories on the Medifast plan when combined with their everyday activity may be enough to lose weight. Good news for men — that means you may not have to add any exercise regimen to your Medifast diet in order to lose weight. In some ways this is also a disadvantage, as the health benefits of being active cannot be denied. The Medifast plan works so well for men that there are no “extra foods” aimed at men on the Medifast plan. Whereas women get a few extras that are intended to help them lose weight, Medifast figures men have enough of an advantage to lose weight without extras.
Medifast for Women
While it is true that men can shed weight with ease, there’s a big benefit for women on the Medifast plan. There are some advantages to being a woman when it comes to weight loss — mostly on the mental side of weight loss. Women tend to be more in touch with their bodies, and can tell when they’re losing healthy weight a lot faster than men may notice the same. Medifast for women is also more healthy because of women’s increased ability to monitor their own diet — if something isn’t working out or if a woman needs more protein or more exercise, she’s more likely to notice that the diet needs a change than her male counterpart.
Medifast knows women’s difficulties with losing weight and has prepared some specially formulated foods aimed at helping women on their road to better health. The Medifast Health Shake Plus for Women contains some added ingredients meant to increase women’s productivity with the diet, ingredients like black cohosh, echinacea, and chaste tree berry that are proven to do everything from reduce the severe symptoms of menopause, (hot flashes and night sweats) as well as contribute to women’s overall health. These ingredients are so strong that Medifast recommends you check with your doctor before using them if you are already on a treatment plan for menopause.
How Much Does Medifast Cost?
Prepared meal diet plans are cost-limiting for some folks. Whereas you can put together a grocery list of healthy foods and spend time bargain hunting, the Medifast diet plan’s foods cost basically the same amount each time you step up to the plate. Most people end up spending about $12 a day on five meals, plus the cost of the sixth “Lean and Green” meal that you prepare yourself. Since you’ll be on the Medifast diet plan for a number of months, you could be looking at a financial commitment in the thousands of dollars. On the positive side, there’s no membership or enrollment fees, so the cost of your prepared meals is the only expense you need to worry about.
Medifast.com Coupons 2010
Like many online vendors, Medifast.com offers online promotions and coupons available to anyone who can use a search engine. Run a quick web search for “Medifast.com coupons” and you’ll have thousands of results in no time. Having tested more than a few Medifast.com coupons myself, I’m familiar with a few promo codes that have worked for my friend and me.
Using these promo codes when shopping at Medifast.com is easy — look for the blank spot on the ordering page that says “Promo Code” or “Coupon Code” and enter the code of your choice. In most cases you can only use one coupon code at a time.

Medical Opinion of the Medifast Diet Plan
The Medifast diet plan has been reviewed by medical professionals — many doctors suggest the Medifast plan for overweight patients or those suffering from type 2 diabetes. According to Medifast (and to their team of MDs) when the diet is used properly it is completely healthy and almost 100% effective. Any diet that limits your calories effectively is going to produce weight loss. The problem with Medifast is that some people just won’t be able to stick to it. There are other people, those suffering from certain heart conditions, liver or kidney disease, cancer, and pregnant or breastfeeding women, who should not take part in the Medifast diet plan.
Any diet plan that uses prepared meals is going to be accused of being “a fad diet”, but Medifast uses the packaged meal plan at the outset to take “the guesswork” out of healthy meal planning. Many people are ready to lose weight but aren’t ready to teach themselves a whole new way of shopping and cooking. The prepared meals plan is like a stepping stone to your own healthy eating plan — the initial run of low calorie packaged meals is meant to allow you to see weight loss results quickly and safely. Remember that once you’ve hit your target weight, you’ll enter the months-long transition phase in which you will be taught to eat healthy meals you prepare at home.
The Medifast diet plan is aimed at people who need to lose fifteen pounds or more, or people who have type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes patients are not able to participate in Medifast because of the danger of hypoglycemia from the severely restricted calorie levels and glycemic index of the food. If you’ve had trouble managing your food intake or your weight in the past, Medifast can help you restrict calories painlessly. Some of us need to lose weight but are too busy to cook three meals and two snacks a day — Medifast diet plan meals are “grab and go”, making it easy to eat healthy and get out the door.
What Foods Will I Be Eating?
Let’s face it — a diet plan made up of foods you don’t want to eat is not going to work. Anyone can lose weight eating kale and carrots, but you won’t be getting all the nutrients you need and you’ll be likely to give up just a few days in. Boring food is hard to eat. Medifast knows that, and they offer nearly 100 different foods
On the Medifast “5 & 1” plan, the most common Medifast diet plan, you’ll be eating six snack-sized “meals” every day. Five of these will be prepared Medifast meals and you’ll have a chance to make your own final meal in your own kitchen. The Medifast snack meals include things like shakes, oatmeal, different soups, scrambled eggs, fruit juice drinks, energy bars, and pudding. You can pretty much kiss Beef Wellington goodbye — but you won’t be eating like a rabbit either.
Many people are curious about this “Lean and Green meal” — what kinds of foods will I be expected to prepare at home? Each Lean and Green meal should contain five to seven ounces of meat (like fish, skinless chicken breast, ground turkey, lean beef, or pork chops) and three small servings of low-carb veggies such as celery, spinach, cucumbers, cauliflower, asparagus, or summer squash. Don’t fret, vegetarians — meat substitutes like tofu, Garden Burger patties, and egg whites are acceptable on the Medifast diet plan.
What is a Medifast Flavor Infuser?
The Medifast Flavor Infuser drinks aren’t meal replacements — they’re a way to treat yourself without ruining your weight loss program. Think of them like other flavored drinks — Crystal Light, etc. They come in flavors like Strawberry Lemonade, and some of them even contain caffeine along with the flavoring. Just add the mix to your water and enjoy. Some people will want to watch how many Flavor Infusers they “treat themselves to” because of the caffeine content. The Flavor Infuser is a nice way to give yourself a break.
How Does Medifast Food Taste?
The (Surprisingly) Good
The Medifast soup ranges from average to amazing. There are two Medifast soups, Chicken and Minestrone. In terms of flavor, they are both a little better than “okay”, though the minestrone is a much better soup than the generic Chicken soup. There’s a trick to making these soups, too — if you mix them with water and let them sit for a couple of hours before you heat them up, the dehydrated parts of the soup will be perfectly moist. Add salt, pepper and salsa to the minestrone to make it a truly great soup.
Oatmeal – If you are a fan of pretty plain oatmeal, or are at least used to eating it, you won’t have any trouble with Medifast oatmeal packets. This stuff tastes exactly like “rolled oats” style oatmeal. The available flavors are peach, apple cinnamon, and maple and brown sugar. My favorite is the last, because it seems the most “indulgent”, with lots of heavy flavor to keep your mind off the fact that you’re eating horse food.
Medifast Hot Cocoa is easy to make, really chocolate-y, and an easy to drink snack that works well to satisfy both your chocolate and your “hot drink” craving. This took the place of my daily Starbucks drink, and it worked well.
Unlike the similarly made Hot Coca, you should definitely stay away from the Medifast Chai Latte. Mix the nasty powder with water, shove it in the microwave, and hate yourself for the rest of the day. That’s how bad the flavor of this stuff is — it is nothing like Chai or Latte, so I don’t know where they got the name from.
I looked forward to the Medifast Iced Tea substitute — I’m a huge ice tea drinker, especially when it starts to get hot outside. I’ve only tried the Raspberry and Peach flavors, so I can only say that the two of them are downright impossible to drink. You know that terrible “soy” flavor you get in your mouth with some Medifast foods, especially the dessert? Imagine drinking nothing but a tall glass of that mixed with ice and a very artificial “fruit” flavor. Avoid these iced teas if you grew up drinking real iced tea.

Don’t worry, you aren’t going to be eating meal replacements and lean proteins all day long. The people at Medifast know that you’ll need to satisfy a craving or two along the way to your new weight. There are many different kinds of snacks, both salty and sweet, to help keep you “on the wagon”.
If you’re a “salty snack” type of person, you may feel even more left out than the Medifast dieter with a sweet tooth. Salty snacks are the opposite of the kind of thing you should be eating on the Medifast Diet Plan, but thankfully, Medifast has you at least partially covered.
- Medifast pretzels — Don’t expect the traditional “crossed” pretzel shape, Medifast only offers “pretzel sticks”. These come in two flavors right now — honey mustard and cinnamon. As far as savory flavor goes, the honey mustard variety of Medifast pretzels is top notch, and most reviewers say the same thing. The fact that these pretzels come in “stick form” means they’re easier to carry around. Medifast may have skimped on the “pretzel” part (these don’t really have that pretzel flavor we all know and love) but the flavor is fairly intense, especially for diet food.
- Medifast cheese puffs — Again, Medifast offers you something of a variety in the cheese puffs department. There are two flavors of cheese puffs, chili nacho and Parmesan. The texture is more dense than a Cheetoh but not quite as hard as the pretzel sticks. You will get a satisfying “crunch” from these snacks — and crunchy snacks can be a problem on the mostly crunch-free Medifast Diet Plan. Beware that both varieties of cheese puffs will leave you with some pretty foul breath because of the onion like flavor that lurks just underneath the cheese.
There are plenty of sweet options to tempt people who don’t want to give up their desserts and sweet snacks.
- Medifast shakes — These high protein and sometimes antioxidant shakes have names that are less than tempting. For instance, Chocolate Appetite Reduction. Having said that, the chocolate shake is actually very tasty. Reviewers all seem to be saying the same thing — combine any of the Medifast shakes with a little bit of ice and it takes away some of the natural grittiness of these sweet treats. The cost is one of the big downsides of these shakes (besides the fact that any flavor with vanilla in it will be a chalky mess) is their cost. $11 a box adds up over time, and you can spend as much as $200 in a month on the shakes alone.
- Medifast cinnamon pretzel sticks — A wicked combination of sweet and salty, you’ll notice (as people do about the regular Medifast pretzels) that there’s something missing — that trademark “pretzel taste”. Think of these as “naked pretzels” . . . there’s no salty bumps on the exterior and the texture is quite different. If you’re looking for a crunchy, salty pretzel, you should probably stick to the honey mustard variety or stop eating pretzels altogether. Medifast just doesn’t have room on their diet to include anything that salty. People love these cinnamon pretzel sticks not because they taste exactly like a pretzel, but because of the extremely cinnamony taste that is combined with a “real butter” flavor. Perfect for satisfying a craving.
- Medifast bars — Medifast offers a wide variety of “supplement bars” which are meant to control your cravings and assist you in losing weight without ruining your diet or starving yourself. They come in at just over $16 per box, and because they are so delicious, many reviewers post that they were often tempted to eat more than one per day. The variety of flavors alone is amazing — Carmel Nut, Peanut Butter, Fruit and Granola Nut, Oatmeal Raisin, Chocolate Mint, Lemon Yogurt, Chocolate and S’more Granola. Just remember to eat the Medifast bars before the late afternoon, otherwise they will throw off your diet.
- Medifast brownies — The Medifast brownies seem to be the least popular Medifast sweet foods. Reviewers note that while the brownies do contain some chocolate chips, which is a nice departure from the diet, the flavors are not strong and the texture is a little too loose. A good brownie is fairly chewy, and these brownies are pretty light and fluffy.
- Medifast pudding — This low fat and cholesterol free pudding is good enough that many reviewers say they had trouble keeping their non dieting friends and family from eating their “diet food”. At $14.50 a week, those are some expensive stolen puddings. All that aside, there are two Medifast pudding flavors, banana and chocolate. Banana seems to be more popular than chocolate, as the chocolate flavor is “grainy” to some people. Things like pudding are not usually considered diet foods, so this food works on that “I’m treating myself” level. You’ll hear a little bit of grumbling on review sites about the pudding, but I chalk that up to the fact that most people aren’t adventurous enough to taste the banana flavor.
What is the Medifast blender?
Technically called the “HealthMate blender”, this is the tool sold by Medifast that is meant to allow you to create healthy foods on the go without spending an arm and a leg on a fancy blender. At just under $40, the HealthMate blender from Medifast is a great tool for mixing up some of your Medifast Meals. Whether you’re eating a cold drink, like a smoothie or a shake, or hot liquids like Medifast’s puddings, there’s a tool here to get the job done.
The HealthMate Blender set includes the blender itself, and a couple of chopping blades as well as 4 large drink cups (you can blend and drink right from the same cup, saving you time washing dishes), 2 small blend and drink cups, a set of standard strainer lids, and a Medifast recipe guide to help you create healthy and delicious liquid meals when you need them.
