What is a Cabbage Soup Diet?

Diets that promise to help you “lose weight quick” are everywhere. There are special cookies you can buy, strange drinks containing lemon juice and hot peppers, even exercise machines that claim to help you shed weight fast.

The Cabbage Soup Diet promises you can lose ten pounds in just seven days. This kind of short-term weight loss is perfect for that high school reunion coming up, or for a bride who wants to look her best at her wedding. But how is it possible to lose nearly a dozen pounds in about a week?

Cabbage Soup Diet Plan

I want to start out by insisting that you not use the Cabbage Soup Diet plan for long-term weight loss. A diet like this if taken too seriously or eaten for too long can really do damage to your body. If you have doubts about this, or if you’re planning on going on the cabbage soup diet, talk to your doctor.

Do not follow the Cabbage Soup Diet for more than a week. If you want to return to the Cabbage Soup Diet, you can do so after a two week break.

The Cabbage Soup Diet works because it forces you to eat a low fat and high fiber diet. We’ve known for years that high amounts of fiber and avoiding fat is the key to staying trim — going on a seven day Cabbage Soup Diet is just taking that advice to the extreme.

The Cabbage Soup Diet is not what it sounds like — you aren’t going to be eating cabbage soup over and over again. There is a little variety, but what variety exists is still made up of high fiber and low fat foods.

Here is the Cabbage Soup Diet plan:

You must prepare a cabbage soup as it is described here —

  • 6 large green onions
  • 2 green peppers
  • 2 cans of tomatoes
  • 4 Carrots
  • 12 oz. mushrooms of your choice
  • 1 bunch of celery
  • half a head of cabbage
  • 1 or 2 cubes of chicken or beef bouillon (optional)
  • Season to taste with your favorite seasonings, like salt, pepper, garlic, cumin, etc.

Directions:

  1. Slice green onions, put in a pot and start to saute with cooking spray.
  2. Cut green pepper stem end off and cut in half, take the seeds and membrane out. Cut the green-pepper into bite size pieces and add to pot.
  3. Take the outer leafs layers off the cabbage, cut into bite size pieces, add to pot.
  4. Clean carrots, cut into bite size pieces, and add to pot.
  5. Slice mushrooms into thick slices, add to pot.
  6. If you would like a spicy soup, add a small amount of curry or cayenne pepper now.
  7. You can use beef or chicken bouillon cubes for seasonings. These have all the salt and flavors you will need.
  8. Add about 12 cups of water to the pot, cover and put heat on low. Let soup cook for a long time – two hours or more works best. Season again to taste with salt and pepper.

Once you’ve prepared enough of this soup to last you a week (at least one cup a day but often more than that), you’ll need to follow a specific diet plan like the one here.

Day One:

This is a Fruit Day. You should eat all of the fruit you can stand, except for bananas which are a bit too fatty for this diet. Eat only your cabbage soup and the fruit of your choice for the first day. For beverages, you can have unsweetened tea, water, or unsweetened fruit juice.

Day Two:

This is a Veggie Day. Eat veggies until you are sick of them, but avoid the fruit fiesta you had yesterday. The fresher the better, though cooked veggies are okay. Avoid beans and corn, though if it is what you want, go ahead. If you’re sick of veggies and fruit, you can prepare a buttery baked potato for dinner.

Day Three:

This is a combination of days one and two. Eat your soup, fruits, and any veggies you want. No baked potato for you at dinner, though.

Day Four:

Now it is time to pour on a little bit of fat. You should eat up to eight bananas today, and slam as many glasses of skim milk as you can stand. Eat three cups of your cabbage soup for meals. This day is supposed to lessen your desire for sweets — bananas are naturally sweet and delicious.

Day Five:

This is a weird day — the creators of the diet call it “beef and tomatoes”. You need to eat between ten and twenty ounces of beef along with six whole fresh tomatoes. The good news is you only need to eat one serving of cabbage soup today — that stuff must be getting old by now.

Day Six:

Today is Fish and Veggies Day — eat as much fish and as many veggies as you want. Just remember to eat your cabbage soup at least one time.

Day Seven:

Stuff Yourself on Rice Day — eat as much brown rice, unsweetened fruit juice, water, and vegetables as you want. The idea of today is to stuff yourself full, but make sure you eat a bowl of soup at least once.

Pros and Cons of the Cabbage Soup Diet

The main “pro” to the Cabbage Soup Diet is that you’ll lose a noticeable amount of weight quickly. Another good thing about this diet — you can east as much as you want most days, though you need to limit yourself to those foods listed in the plan. The final “pro” of the Cabbage Soup Diet is the fact that you can use it to kick off a new diet, and get yourself in the spirit of losing weight.

As for downsides — some people think the cabbage soup as described in the diet’s recipe is bland and difficult to eat more than once or twice. Doctors also suggest that the specific foods on the diet could lead to some temporary discomfort — the biggest downside is that you may find you have trouble concentrating due to a lack of carbohydrates in your diet.

I can not emphasize this enough – do not use this diet for more than a week at a time. The Cabbage Soup Diet will most likely be a big success for you as long as you follow the rules religiously.
