What Is Numerology?

Think of numerology as a kind of astrology bound to the Earth. Numerology is the study of the symbolism of different numbers and especially how those numbers and their symbolism relate to humans on Earth. Numerology is used much like astrology or religion as a spiritual pursuit of great truths.

How Is Numerology Used?

People use numerology to gain insight into themselves or other people. According to believers in numerology, numbers can reveal much about a person’s personality, their strengths and weaknesses, hidden talents, obstacles in their life, inner thoughts, and their ways of dealing with other people. Looking at someone’s number symbols is like reading their horoscope.

Generally, people use numerology charts on themselves, either to examine their life, gain a better understanding of themselves, take advantage of opportunities, or just figure out what to do or where to go next. According to believers, numerology is a powerful tool for understanding yourself and your compatibility with the people around you.

A Brief History of Numerology

The beginnings of numerology can be found about 10,000 years in ancient Egypt and Babylonia.

Pythagoras, he of many famous math theorems and the founder of modern mathematics, is usually credited by believers in numerology with organizing the field about 2,600 years ago in ancient Greece. The modern numerological movement has its roots in the early 20th century, when an American spiritualist named L. Dow Balliet and his equally kooky friends revitalized the interest in numbers and numerology.

How Numerology Works

According to followers of numerology, every substance in the universe “vibrates” at a specific frequency. Think of all objects, animals, and thoughts as like little radio broadcasters spitting out a vibration of energy.

According to numerologists, if you find the vibrations of a particular object, you can learn about it. What do you learn? Different things, mostly specific qualities like energies associated with an object and “deep truths” about that object, whether it is a tree, a rock, or a human.

When you apply even the most basic numerological principles (using a name and a birth date) you can work out the major vibrating frequencies of a human being or an animal. Numerological analysis of frequencies you work out with these numbers is the goal of Numerology–figuring things out about a person or an object (their personality and character trait) using only the numbers associated with their and their birth date.

The goal of numerology isn’t to “figure people out” necessarily, but to look at the whole picture of a person, including the dark and diverse parts of their personality that they may not even know about. With this “complete view” of a person, Numerologists are able to make the most of their relationship.

How Are Numerological Calculations Made? Numerology Calculators

Before you go adding up birth dates, understand that numerology has a specific method. It takes years to gain a full understanding of the inner-workings of numerology.

But a basic breakdown of a numerological calculation is possible. Start by reducing all numbers in the universe to the simplest possible representations. In other words, you’ll only be working with the numbers 1-9. In more advanced numerology, you’ll also work with special “master numbers” like 11 and 22, but for now, just think of the numbers 1-9.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 (and 11 and 22) represent the “major vibration rates” associated with the personalities of different people.

The numbers are further reduced for numerological understanding by using basic addition. The number 15, for example, will be reduced into the 1-9 sphere by simply adding the two digits 1 and 5 to get 6. You can reduce larger numbers this way, too–the number 1974 is easy to reduce, simply by adding the four digits 1 + 9 + 7 + 4 to get 21. This number 21 is then reduced by adding the two digits 2 + 1 to get 3.

In this way, no number is too large to be reduced to its basic numerological constant–a single digit number between 1 and 9.

A Numerological Look at a Name

Every letter in an individual’s name can be converted into numbers and then reduced to show a person’s true self. These numbers, those added from different parts of a name, can also be reduced.

Here’s a look at a basic numerological number pattern. Notice how the letter A is 1; the letter B is 2; the letter C is 3, and so on. The following table shows the numbers assigned to all 26 letters in the English alphabet.

Numerologists use these numbers and different mathematical formulas prescribed by numerology’s founders to look at four “major core elements”. There are dozens of other features that numerologists look at, some 20 or 30 “modifiers”, as well.

Numerology looks at a person’s name and birth date, does some simple math, and takes a look at a person’s future, past, and character traits.
