What is Wolfram Alpha?

Wolfram Alpha promises to be a "new kind of search engine". Developed by British physicist Stephen Wolfram, best known for his work on the computational mathematics system known as Mathematica. Wolfram Alpha is set to premiere in May 2009 as an "answer engine", meaning it will answer questions rather than searching for generic terms. Users may be somewhat familiar with the concept of the "answer engine" as Google can handle some basic question and answer formats -- try typing in "What is 2 plus 2?" in Google and you'll see what I mean.
