A Little History…
If you don’t own a food processor, you know what a pain it is to have to chop, mix and shred a lot of food (especially if you have a large family to cook for). So you can imagine what a nuisance it was for caterers and restaurant chefs to prepare foods in such a manner for the amount of people they serve before the invention of the food processor. Pierre Vurdun, a salesman for a French catering company, witnessed this firsthand and produced the first simple food processor – a bowl with a blade in it. By 1960, Robot-Coupe had evolved; a company that made food processors for caterers. In the late 60s, induction motors were introduced in food processors. But it wasn’t until the 70s that domestic food processors were made available. Carl Sontheimer introduced the Magimix 1800 to the United States in 1973 under the Cuisinart brand.
But What Does a Food Processor Do? – Food Processor Uses
- Chop and slice fruits and vegetables
- Grind meat, nuts, and seeds
- Grate or shred cheese and vegetables
- Mix and knead dough
So yes, you can do many of this stuff by hand but it is a terrible pain. The powerful motor that drives your average food processor really does all the work for you, and you don’t need any liquids present like you do with a blender. You’ll have no sore hands to worry about and no fear about cutting yourself with your knife while chopping. Modern food processors have safety features like automatic shut-off when the bowl is off the base and a feed tube that allows you to add food while processing without endangering your fingers.
Cuisinart was indeed the first brand of food processors domestically available in the United States and actually many people simply call food processors “cuisinarts.” While it is a misnomer, it gives you some idea about how important the brand is in the food processor industry. Though they’ve branched out into many different kitchen appliances, Cuisinart remains dedicated to their quality food processors. You’ll come across a lot of different brands if you’re in the market for a food processor, but don’t be fooled by imitators. Don’t waste your money on a cheap knock-off with a brand name you’ve never even heard of. Stick with a company you know and trust like Cuisinart.
