Computer hacking may seem like a cool thing to do. They’ve made movies where a hacker is the good guy so it must be true, right? WRONG. Computer hacking is a serious crime that violates other people’s privacy and can get you in loads of trouble if you are ever caught. Being the victim of a computer hacker is one of the worst feelings. It’s like coming home and finding out that someone has been prowling through your house. It leaves you feeling violated and unprotected. If it happened once, it can happen again. At some point you have to ask yourself “how do I protect my computer from hackers on the Internet”?
Statistically, most people will never be the victim of a computer hacker but if it ever does happen, you will never forget it. So why take the chance? You are really more likely to be attacked by a computer virus or spyware but these are malicious programs that hackers can also use to gain access to your personal information. The good news is there are some steps that you can take to protect your computer.
Set Up A Firewall
A firewall can prevent intruders from breaking into your computer via the Internet or a network. Hackers can break into your computer because computers on any kind of network can recognize, or ‘see’, another computer. Firewalls basically hide your computer and keep it from being seen. You can set up a firewall to be recognized by specific computers if needed. There are two different versions of firewalls. There is a software firewall and a hardware firewall. A software firewall is a program loaded onto your computer. It is easier to set up because the program does the work for you automatically. You can buy a firewall software or get a free firewall online. Since it is a program that constantly runs, it takes up RAM and can slow down a computer’s performance.
A hardware firewall is also called a router. This is a physical device attached to your computer and is probably the best kind of firewall to have. It can block all kinds of viruses and can either prevent or slow down a hacker trying to do a port scan to hack your computer. A high-end router can be expensive but because it is hardware, it doesn’t slow down your computer by taking up memory.
Use Anti-Virus Software
Get An Anti-Spyware Program
Spyware is another malicious program similar to a virus. Spyware gets its name from the fact that it allows someone else to view your personal files, gain access to passwords, track your movements on the Internet, and allow some degree of control over your computer. Spyware is more common that viruses and hacking but computer hackers can use the spyware to steal your identity. The best solution to protect your computer against malicious spyware is to get an anti-spyware software such as SpyKiller or A2 Guard. These programs work much like anti-virus software. They run scans on incoming emails, attachments, and all downloads for hidden spyware. Once detected, the programs can quarantine and delete the spyware.
Use A Spam Filter
SPAM emails are incredibly annoying. Once someone that you don’t know gets a hold of your email address you can be guaranteed to be put on someone’s mailing list. The real danger of SPAM is that it is a tool often used by hackers to slip a virus, spyware, or other infectious code into your computer. You can prevent this by getting a SPAM filter for your email. Some systems will already contain a SPAM filter but if you don’t have one, you can buy a software package. SPAM filters can block emails suspected of being SPAM or they can flag certain emails as suspected SPAM and you can inspect them yourself.
